Enneagram Types, 27 Unique Profiles: The Enneagram Subtypes

When one is introduced to the Enneagram, one is normally consumed with one's type: what does it mean to be a "1," or a "5," or a "9?" As we learn more about the Enneagram, we recognize that there is great subtlety in the expression of Enneagram type: Wings, Security- and Stress-points, and levels of development all influence how we experience and express our respective Enneagram types.

But perhaps the most important variable influencing the experience and expression of our Enneagram type is our Instinctual Subtype: The Subtypes represent some of the most automatic and unconscious patterns associated with the personality. While we all have varying levels of the three Subtypes within us, the manner in which they manifest is critical to the role our Enneagram type plays in our lives: A person with a dominant "Self-Preservation" Subtype experiences and approaches the world in a very different manner from a person of the same Enneagram type and a dominant "Social" Subtype. And more importantly, each of the nine Enneagram types has a "counter" Subtype—a dominant Subtype that runs counter to the main energetic flow of an Enneagram type, thus potentially disguising some of the most notable traits of that type. This means that knowing the nine Enneagram types is not enough to understand type-related behavior and dynamics – we must become familiar with all of the distinct 27 subtypes to have a full and complete sense of the Enneagram system of personality.

Accordingly, IEA/SoCal is honored to present Dr. Beatrice Chestnut's program, The Enneagram Subtypes, on Saturday, October 24 in Tustin. Based on the work of Claudio Naranjo, Bea will lecture, lead discussions, offer examples in characters as they are portrayed in literature, film and television, and work with panels in presenting her innovative work illuminating the critical influence the Subtypes have on the manner in which we experience and express our Enneagram types.

Beatrice Chestnut, Ph.D., M.A., M.F.T. has been working with the Enneagram for over eighteen years. She has a Ph.D. in communication and an M.A. in clinical psychology. She has taught at Northwestern University, the California Institute of Integral Studies, and the School of Law at the University of San Francisco. Currently, she has a private psychotherapy practice and teaches Enneagram workshops in San Francisco. She was trained as a group facilitator at Stanford's Graduate School of Business. She then completed the Palmer/Daniels Enneagram Professional Training Program in 1997, and Ginger Lapid-Bogda's "Train-the-Trainers" trainings in 2005 and 2007. She served as President of the International Enneagram Association from 2006 to 2007, and currently serves as Co-Editor of the IEA's Enneagram Journal.

The cost of the program is $75 for IEA/SoCal Members, and $100 for non-Members. The program starts promptly at 9:00 AM, with check-in and light breakfast starting at 8:30 AM. Pre-registration (with your check, name, phone number and e-mail address) is highly recommended.
